Will your pool water kill your grass?

Posted on November 27, 2020 by Greg Pelka

If you are one of the lucky ones in Queensland, you’ll have a pool on your property to ensure you can cool off during those hot summer months.

And, it is becoming more and more common for turf lovers to install grass closer and closer to the edge of their pool – but will the pool water kill your lawn? We answer this question, and a few more, below!

Why lay turf near your pool?

There are two big reasons (and many smaller ones) to have turf laid near your pool:

  1. Getting out of your pool and stepping onto grass is a lot more comfortable than stepping onto hot concrete; and
  2. Lawn going up to the edge of your pool looks visually appealing.

Will pool water kill your lawn?

In most situations, pool water will not kill your turf, no matter what turf variety you have in your yard. Wet feet and the odd splash should not cause many hassles to your grass, as the levels of chlorine and pool chemicals should never be in high enough concentrations that they burn or cause pH problems for your lawn.

Additionally, turf is really good at figuring out the nutrients it needs and avoiding the ones that it doesn’t require. In saying this, don’t go and pour a huge amount of pool water onto your grass, as it certainly won’t like that!

Things to remember

  • Chlorinated pool water can be harmful to both plants and the environment. If you need to empty your pool for cleaning or repairs, you will need to reduce the concentration of chlorine to a low level (around 0.1 parts per million), before you start to empty it out into the surrounding lawn and environment.
  • If you have to add chlorine to your pool manually and accidentally spill some on the lawn, make sure that you immediately dilute it by giving the area a really good water.
  • On the other side of things, grass may get into your pool from a variety of sources – from the wind blowing it to being walked in by your feet. If left uncleaned, this can affect the pH of your pool and throw things out of balance. Most of this should be caught by your skimmer basket for removal, however anything else may need manual removal or the use of a creepy crawly.

Tip: Make sure you are cleaning your pool and testing your pool water on a regular basis to ensure it is within the optimal range.

With these simple things in mind, there really isn’t too much else to worry about, your pool and grass can exist side by side and you can enjoy the benefits!
