How to Lay Turf

Step 1 – Soil Preparation

  • Clear Weeds: Start by removing weeds from the area to be turfed. You can use Roundup Herbicide (or a similar product) or remove them by hand. Make sure to clear the area 7–10 days before laying the turf to ensure effective weed control.
  • Prepare the Soil: Proper drainage is crucial for a successful lawn. For areas with clay-based soil, apply Gypsum before preparing the soil. Use a rotary hoe to break up the soil or cover it with a layer of good-quality topsoil (minimum 25mm).
  • Apply Fertiliser: Spread a starter fertiliser over the soil or directly under where the turf will be laid. Starter fertilisers help establish strong root growth. (You can find suitable fertilisers at Rosemount Turf.)

Following these steps will set the stage for a healthy, thriving lawn.

Step 2 – Measuring and Ordering

  • Measure the Area: Use a tape measure to determine the length and width of the area you plan to turf. Record these measurements in meters.
  • Calculate the Size: Multiply the length by the width to find the total area in square meters. This will give you the amount of turf needed for your project.

Accurate measurements ensure you order the right amount of turf for a seamless installation.

Step 3 – Laying Your New Lawn

  • Start at a Straight Edge: Begin laying turf at the furthest edge from your starting point, such as a fence or driveway. This approach helps avoid walking over the newly laid turf and minimizes disruption.
  • Lay in a Brick Pattern: Arrange the turf in a staggered, brick-like pattern for a neat finish. Ensure the edges of each piece are butted together tightly, avoiding gaps or overlaps. Use a sharp knife or shovel to trim excess turf as needed.
  • Work in Sections: For large areas, tackle smaller sections (e.g., 50m²) at a time. Roll the turf as you go to ensure immediate watering. This step is crucial for the health of your new lawn.
  • Roll the Lawn: If possible, use a turf roller to compact the soil beneath and level out minor uneven areas.
  • Avoid Foot Traffic: Keep off the new turf, including from pets and foot traffic, until it is well established.
  • Topdress if Needed: In Summer or Spring, you may need to topdress with washed sand to fill any depressions. Apply no more than 10mm of sand to avoid smothering the grass.

Following these steps will help ensure a smooth and successful lawn installation.

Step 4 – Watering Your Turf

  • Initial Watering: Within 5–10 minutes of installation, give your new lawn at least 25mm of water. To measure this, place an old cup under the sprinkler or irrigation system and check the amount of water collected.
  • Daily Watering: Water your turf multiple times a day—3 to 4 times—for the first 7–10 days. Aim for 10mm to 15mm of water each time to keep the turf and soil consistently moist and promote healthy root establishment.
  • Buffalo and Zoysia Turf: These varieties need more water. Provide 10mm to 15mm of water 4 to 5 times per day for the first 10–14 days. Increase watering on hot days (over 30°C) and windy conditions (over 15 knots) to address additional environmental stress.
  • Post-Establishment: Once the turf can no longer be lifted from the soil, reduce the frequency of watering. Transition to a good soaking once a week during dry weather.

Thorough watering is crucial for preventing stress and ensuring your new lawn establishes well.
