Different weeds require different treatment and choosing the wrong product can waste time, money, and potentially damage your lawn.

Below is a guide to some of the most common weeds found in lawns on the Sunshine Coast and South East Queensland along with the recommended control options.
The best form of weed control is prevention. Regular mowing, correct fertilising, proper watering, and maintaining a healthy, dense lawn will naturally reduce weed invasion. Applying a pre-emergent herbicide before weeds germinate is another effective way to prevent many annual grassy and broadleaf weeds from establishing. Products such as Barricade and Oxafert provide long lasting pre-emergent control when applied at the correct time of year. If weeds do appear, removing by hand while they are small is often the easiest and most effective solution before they have a chance to spread.
What it looks like: A large, tufted perennial grass growing 30-120cm tall with mostly upright stems and leaves, though they may be slightly arching or drooping. Its long, narrow leaves often have rolled edges. The open, branched seed head bears many flattened, grey-green to purplish flower spikelets, each containing 4-13 tiny flowers.
Treatment: African lovegrass is a difficult to control perennial grass that spreads by seed and can form dense infestations. Control is most effective when plants are actively growing and treated before seed heads develop. For larger areas, repeated herbicide application with Glyphosate may be required with spot spraying for a targeted treatment. (Will kill areas where Glyphosate has been sprayed.)
What it looks like: A fast growing annual broadleaf weed with upright stems, broad leaves and a dense flower spike that develops into seed heads. It commonly appears in lawns, garden beds, and disturbed soils, where it spreads rapidly by producing thousands of seeds.
Treatment: Remove young plants by hand before they flower and set seed, ensuring the entire root is removed. What it looks like: A short lived herb that grows up to 40cm tall with a few spreading or upright reddish stems that contain a milky sap and are covered in fine yellowish hairs. Its small paired leaves are dark green or reddish with purple markings, paler underneath, and have uneven bases. Tiny flowers form dense, rounded clusters where the upper leaves join the stem. The plant produces small, hairy seed capsules, each containing three light brown to reddish brown seeds.

What it looks like: A hardy, warm season grass with coarse, light to medium green blades and a slightly open, clumping growth habit. It is easily identified by its distinctive Y-shaped seed heads, which rise above the lawn during the growing season.
Treatment: Bahia Grass can be difficult to eliminate due to its deep root system. Small patches can be dug out by removing the entire root crown. For larger infestations, apply a Glyphosate based herbicide as a spot treatment. Keep in mind that all areas treated will be affected.
What it looks like: A fast growing annual weed that can reach around 1m tall. It has soft, hairy leaves and produces clusters of small blue, purple, or white fluffy flowers. The plant spreads easily by seed, allowing it to establish quickly.

Its dark, barbed seeds easily attach to clothing, animals and equipment, allowing the plant to spread quickly.

What it looks like: This short lived herb has creeping or scrambling stems and compound leaves made up of 2-11 small leaflets. It produces clusters of small pink, purple to pinkish-orange pea shaped flowers, followed by narrow seed pods that point backwards. It spreading growth habit allows it to quickly cover disturbed areas.
Treatment: Due to the long taproot and woody stems this weed is hard to remove. A dicamba based product such as Double Time is effective but MUST NOT be used on Sir Walter DNA Certified Buffalo. What it looks like: A spreading weed with small clover like leaves and yellow flowers. It grows along the ground and can quickly cover areas of lawn.

What it looks like: A common weed that grows in spreading clumps with flat leaves. It is easily recognised by its distinctive seed heads which resemble a crow's foot, with 3-7 finger like spikes radiating from a single point. It thrives in compacted soils and thin lawns, spreading quickly by seed.
Treatment: Remove small plants by hand before they produce seed, ensuring the roots are pulled out. Larger infestations can be treated with a selective herbicide that targets grassy weeds while being safe for your lawn, use a Glyphosate based herbicide as a spot treatment. Keep in mind that all areas treated will be affected.
What it looks like: A group of similar looking weeds that form low growing rosettes with grey-green, toothed leaves covered in fine white wooly hairs. In spring, they produce upright stems with woolly flower heads and can spread by seed. Cudweeds are usually annual or short lived perennial wees that are most noticeable when they emerge from their winter rosettes. Cudweeds form when Nitrogen levels are low. A good quality fertiliser such as Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser will assist.

What it looks like: This short lived herb grows 15-60cm tall with leaves arranged in a loose rosette and along the stem. It produces slender pink to purple flower heads without obvious petals, followed by small seeds with fine white hairs that help them spread by wind.

Treatment: Can be controlled using a selective sedge herbicide such as Lawn Solutions Sedge Control. For best results, apply the product when the weed is actively growing. What it looks like: This long-lived sedge grows 20-50cm tall and spreads through underground stems that produce small tubers, making it difficult to remove completely. It has smooth, three sided flowering stems and narrow leaves growing in tufts at the base.

What it looks like: A tufted, short lived grass growing up to 60cm tall with spreading semi-upright stems. It has narrow, mostly hairless leaves with a small thin structure where the leaf blade meets the stem. The seed head has 1-15 branches that spread out from a single point, each densely covered with small flower spikelet's.
Treatment: A product such as Ferris WG has the ability to control hard-to-kill weeds. (Safe to use on Buffalo Lawns)
What it looks like: This tall, long lived grass can grow up to 1.5m high and forms dense clumps. It has upright stems with narrow leaves and produces distinctive seed heads made up of several branches covered with small, hairy flower spikes. These seed heads help the plant spread and make it easier to identify when mature.
Treatment: Paspalum is best controlled when it is actively growing, before seed heads develop. Small patches can be removed by digging out the entire plant, including the grown and roots, as any remaining roots can regrow. For larger infestations spot treat with Glyphosate. Keep in mind, this will kill areas that have been treated.
What it looks like: Is a low growing, creeping weed that spreads through trailing stems and can quickly form dense mats in lawns, gardens, and damp areas. It has small, rounded leaves and thrives in moist, shaded conditions, making it a common problem in poorly drained or overwatered areas.
Treatment: Control Pennywort by improving drainage, reducing excess moisture, and maintaining healthy turf or garden cover. Apply Estate Herbicide Concentrate 250ml, Bow and Arrow Herbicide 500ml, or Lawn Solutions All Purpose Weed Control Hose-On 2l. (Safe to use on Buffalo Lawns)
What it looks like: Pigface is best controlled by removing the entire plant, including the roots and creeping stems, as any pieces left behind can regrow. Hand removal is effective for small infestations, especially when the soil is moist.
