The Ultimate Turf Guide

An in-depth guide of everything turf

Turf is referred to by many different names; lawn, grass, sward, or the green leafy land coverage. No matter the naming, choosing the perfect turf for your home or business can dramatically change its overall appearance and increase your property value up to 20%.

In this guide, we aim to provide you with enough information to help educate you on which turf will be best for your home or business. If you have questions or need additional information feel free to talk to our turf experts on 07 5448 6398.

Turf and its environment

Turf reacts differently depending on the type of environment that it is in and the tolerances of the turf itself. When choosing a turf that will best suit your home or business several determining factors need to be considered. These can include:

Turf in the shade

Shade

Different types of turf are more tolerant to a lack of sunlight such as Sir Walter and Sir Grange. However, it is important to note that an area that receives no sunlight at all will be incredibly difficult to keep turf alive due to the lack of photosynthesis.

Frost

During the winter months if frost is a regular occurrence on your turf the growing process is slowed and in severe cases can stop growing altogether. This isn’t a time to cheer though as prolonged exposure to frost can damage your turf and cause discolouration.

Investing in a frost-resistant turf like Sir Walter can help to combat the colder months. This is in part due to its wide leaf allowing it to soak up more sunlight than thinner blade turf varieties.

Watering Turf

Available Water

Turf needs water to survive. Newly laid turf will require watering a couple of times a day for the first couple of weeks until the turf roots into the soil.

Drought-resistant turfs such as Sir Walter, TifTuf, or Nullarbor Couch can survive longer in rainless areas, however, will still require watering now and again to stay healthy.

Maintenance

Turf varieties such as Sir Grange and Sir Walter are low-maintenance. Each is low maintenance in its own way depending on your needs.

Sir Walter: This is a tight-growing turf that helps to hold out most weeds. It also repairs itself quickly if damaged resulting in fewer bare patches.

Sir Grange: Has a very slow growth pattern resulting in significantly less mowing than other turf varieties.

Wear

High traffic on turf, crushes the air pockets in the soil limiting the amount of oxygen, nutrients, and water that can soak and move through the soil. Getting a high wear tolerant soil such as Sir Grange, Sir Walter, Tiftuf, and Nullarbor Couch can help to combat this in different ways.

All are self-repairing and can return back to normal faster than other turf varieties.

Tiftuf and Nullarbor Couch both have a high-density growth habit allowing them to be able to handle high wear areas easier.

Common Turf Varieties in Australia

Different turf varieties require varying elements to survive and thrive properly. Some require more resources than others to stay lush and healthy where others are more tolerable. Soil types, wear levels, shade levels, and maintenance requirements are just some of the things to keep in mind when looking at which turf you should purchase.

Below is a list of some of the more common turf varieties available for your project.

Buffalo

Buffalo turf is one of the most popular laid turfs in Australia. Previously this turf used to be scratchy and could irritate the skin however, these days since the introduction of soft leaf buffalo turf such as Sir Walter the turf is now soft to touch, hard wearing, looks great and is perfect for most areas.
