Preparing for a Spring lawn reno

Posted on September 18, 2020 by Greg Pelka

Although it is easy to get a little carried away when it comes to organising a lawn reno – we know! – the best advice we can give you is to not go too early with any vigorous lawn maintenance activities. It is crucial to remember that your lawn needs to be actively growing and performing strongly during the warmer months before undertaking activities like top dressing or dethatching.

With this in mind, you can prepare for a spring lawn reno by organising the necessary equipment, so you are ready to go when your lawn has started growing strongly again. Keep reading to learn a little more, or give Rosemount Turf a call and we would be happy to help!

Do I really need a lawn renovation?

If your lawn has developed a combo of compaction and thatch, you likely need a lawn reno. Additionally, if your lawn is looking unhealthy and specific soil improvements are required to improve the turfs’ foundation, this is another great time to sort out a lawn renovation.

In some cases, a comprehensive lawn reno may be required every 3-4 years. Although it isn’t completely necessary to complete every step, it can be super beneficial to do this from time to time if you are looking to achieve the best results with your lawn.  Also, if your lawn is looking a little neglected, dethatching or top dressing will be required more often.

It is worth noting that some turf varieties require more frequent renovations, such as couch grass, depending on the level of inputs and preferred height of cut. We always suggest chatting to a turf professional if you are unsure in any way.

When should I complete a lawn renovation?

The October long weekend in most states is a good guide as to when you should complete your lawn renovation.

How do I complete a lawn reno?

Although it may sound trivial, completing a lawn renovation in the correct order ensures you get the best out of each step, resulting in your lawn recovering from winter as quickly as possible. The steps, in order, include:

  1. Weed removal.
  2. Dethatching.
  3. Aerating.
  4. Fertilising.
  5. Top dressing.
  6. Watering for recovery.

What do you need for a lawn renovation?

There are a few things you’ll need to complete a lawn renovation:

  • A knapsack or a pressure sprayer.
  • Herbicides as part of weed treatment.
  • Dethatching rake or machine (you can hire a dethatching machine if you’d like).
  • Manual aerating device, like a garden fork or manual corer (or hired machine).
  • Fertiliser.
  • Top dressing soil/sand.
  • Soil spreader.
  • pH test kit.
  • Soil amendments if needed (gypsum, lime, sulphate of ammonia for example).
  • Irrigation or sprinkler.
