When it comes to fertilising your lawn, it is generally pretty easy. Buy your fertiliser, spread it out across your turf and, depending on whether you have chosen a liquid or granular product, water in or dilute and apply.
If you are even at this stage, it means you have good intentions to begin with, which is great. But when you head out to check your lawn a few days later and it doesn’t look like you’d hoped.
Where have you gone wrong? Did you do something incorrectly? Here are the 4 most common mistakes when it comes to fertilising your lawn – if you need some help, give Rosemount Turf a call today.
If you have applied fertiliser too early, this can result in underperformance. If you apply fertiliser before the soil is consistently above 14°C, your fertiliser is really going to waste. Grass must be actively growing and out of its winter dormancy before it will benefit from any fertiliser application, so applying fertiliser at the right time of year will ensure you get the most out of your lawn.
Lawns need nitrogen, and they love it, but too much can result in burnt grass and/or too much leaf growth and not enough root growth. This occurs with over fertilisation, so always watch the amount of fertiliser you place on your lawn.
How you apply your fertiliser is just as important as the fertiliser you choose. Just throwing fertiliser around without a method will make your lawn look like it is cared for by a goat. Having a proper system of walking back and forth across a lawn with a spreader is a good way to apply granular fertiliser. For liquids, a similar orderly approach can be adopted.
If you do not water your lawn enough, this can lead to your fertiliser burning your turf. Once granular fertiliser is applied, it must be well watered to solubilise it and stop it from damaging your lawn. This is one of the big reasons why you should fertilise just before it rains… But, be careful not to spread it out if a large amount of rain is forecast, too much rain will wash your fertiliser away. This doesn’t help your lawn, nor is it very good for the environment, so no benefits anywhere!
While a large range of fertilisers are similar, not all fertilisers are the same. Always make sure you read and follow the label instructions for the specific fertiliser that you are using, otherwise you may find yourself suffering from one of the above.
