Fertilising is an important part of lawn care and not something that should be neglected. But what happens when you over fertilise your lawn? While some of us can get a bit carried away with ‘more is better’ it can be detrimental to your lawn’s health.
Over fertilising will cause sudden leaf growth and thatch and while this might not appear a big problem at first, the roots won’t experience this same type of rapid growth. This results in a lack of water and nutrients which is needed for your grass to grow.
Because fertiliser consists of mostly mineral salts, excessive fertiliser will cause salt to build up in the soil which makes water difficult to be absorbed. Dried out grass, discolouration and plant death are often tell-tail signs of this.
If the damage has been done in the growing months, your lawn should recover relatively quickly. But if you want to help things along, use a sprinkler to help dilute and flush the mineral salts away from the roots of your lawn.
It’s always good practice to read the label before applying fertiliser so that you are using the optimal rates per square metre. Watering in your fertiliser after applying also elevates the possible risks of burning the leaf of the grass.
If you have a pH imbalance, fertilising will not be as effective, in fact, it could be doing more damage than good. Ensuring your lawns soil pH level is right ensures your lawn is able to absorb the nutrients it requires.
