Spring Lawn Care: Get Your Lawn Ready for Summer

Spring Lawn Care: Get Your Lawn Ready for Summer 1

Spring is the perfect time to give your lawn a little extra attention. As temperatures rise on the Sunshine Coast your grass begins to actively grow again. The right care now can help you achieve a healthier, greener and more resilient lawn heading into the heat of summer.

Here are some simple spring lawn care jobs to put on your list.

1. Start Mowing Regularly

As the weather warms up, your lawn will begin growing more quickly. Regular mowing helps keep it looking neat while encouraging healthy, dense growth.

A good rule is to avoid moving more than around one-third of the grass height in a single mow. Cutting too short can stress the lawn and leave it more vulnerable to weeds, heat and moisture loss.

Don't forget to check your mower blades too. A sharp blade gives the grass a clean cut and helps reduce unnecessary stress.

2. Give Your Lawn a Spring Feed

After winter, your lawn can benefit from some extra nutrients. Applying a quality lawn fertiliser such as granular fertilisers like Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser, ProPlus Natural Carbon Fertiliser. You could also go with a liquid option like Exceed Liquid Fertiliser in spring can encourage stronger growth, improved colour and a thicker lawn.

Always choose a fertiliser suited to your particular grass variety and follow the application instructions carefully.

3. Keep Weeds Under Control

Spring warmth and moisture don't just encourage your grass to grow, weeds love it too!

Keep an eye out for weeds appearing throughout the lawn and deal with them early. Small outbreaks are much easier to manage before they have a chance to spread.

4. Water Deeply, Not Constantly

As temperatures increase, your lawn will need more water. Rather than frequent, light watering, aim for deeper watering that encourages a stronger, deeper root system.

Of course, the Sunshine Coasts rainfall can vary significantly, so adjust your watering according to weather conditions and any local water restrictions.

5. Aerate Compacted Areas

Does water sit on your lawn instead of soaking into the soil? Does the ground feel hard underfoot?

Your soil may be compacted.

Aeration creates small channels in the soil, allowing water, oxygen and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively. Spring is a great time to address compacted areas before the heat of summer arrives.

6. Repair Bare or Thin Areas

Spring is also an ideal time to tackle those patches that have appeared over winter.

Depending on your grass variety, you may be able to repair bare areas with turf or turf runners. Prepare the soil first and keep newly established consistently moist until the grass has developed a strong root system.

7. Keep an Eye Out for Lawn Problems

Warm, humid conditions can create the perfect environmeent for lawn pests and diseases.

Regularly inspect your lawn for unusual patches, thinning, discoloration or signs of insect activity. Identifying a problem early can make it much easier to manage.

Avoid treating the entire lawn unnecessarily, first identify what you're dealing with and choose a treatment appropriate for your grass. If you're not sure what your lawn needs, the best approach is to identify your grass variety and assess the condition of the soil and lawn before choosing a treatment program.
