Do you have unsightly tyre marks or ruts on your lawn? Whether it’s from a car, a bike, or a heavy footfall, these marks can quickly make your well-maintained lawn look damaged and uneven. Fortunately, there are a few simple methods you can use to repair ruts, as well as tips to prevent them from happening in the future. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the process of fixing tyre marks and ruts, and share advice on how to protect your lawn going forward.

What Causes Tyre Marks or Ruts?

Tyre marks or ruts appear when vehicles, motorbikes, or even bicycles pass over grass on wet or saturated soil. The weight of the vehicles causes the soil to compress and sink, creating unsightly divots or ruts in your lawn.

Assessing the Damage

Before repairing the ruts, it’s important to assess the severity of the damage. Are the ruts shallow (up to 10 cm deep) or deep (over 10 cm)? This will help determine the best method for repair.

Repairing Small Ruts

For shallow ruts (less than 10 cm deep), the solution is to loosen the compacted soil beneath the lawn. You can do this by using a garden fork. Insert the fork underneath the rut, pull it down, and lift the turf slightly above the surrounding lawn. This will allow the turf to level out in the coming days. Repeat this process across the damaged area until the ground is level.

Fixing Larger Ruts

For deeper ruts, a few more steps are required:

  1. Use a spade to cut three sides along the rut, lifting the turf to access the soil beneath.
  2. Loosen the compacted soil with a garden fork or spade. If the soil remains uneven, add some sandy loam or turf underlay to level it out.
  3. Once the soil is level, fold the turf back over and let it grow back.

If the grass in the rut is severely damaged, consider replacing it with fresh turf. Use a variety that matches your existing lawn, cutting the turf to fit the required area, then lay it over the prepared soil.

After completing the repair, avoid placing any traffic on the affected area until the grass has fully recovered. Regular watering and care will aid in the healing process. Warm-season grasses, like buffalo, couch, kikuyu, and zoysia, typically need the warmth of spring to repair in winter. Fertilising the area during spring can also encourage additional growth.

How to Prevent Ruts in the Future

The simplest way to prevent tyre marks and ruts is to stop vehicles from driving or parking on your lawn.

Here are a couple of tips to help protect your grass:

  • Rope off the area: Place small stakes around your lawn and tie a rope between them to prevent vehicles from entering.
  • Add a sign: A clear "Keep Off the Grass" sign will remind others to avoid driving over your lawn.

Conclusion

By following the steps above, you can successfully repair any tyre marks or ruts in your lawn and restore its pristine appearance. Prevention is always better than cure, so make sure to protect your lawn by limiting foot and vehicle traffic. With a bit of care and attention, your lawn will remain lush, healthy, and rut-free for years to come.
