And, when Autumn comes around, it is a great time to care for your lawn – fertilising included! Keep reading to find out about why Autumn is the perfect time to fertilise your turf and give us a call on (07) 5448 6398 to find out more.

Should I fertilise my lawn in Autumn?

Yes, you should definitely fertilise your turf in Autumn. It is actually one of the most important times of year to do it!

Why should I fertilise my lawn in Autumn?

If you have a grass variety that loves warm weather, like buffalo, zoysia, couch or kikuyu, as it gets colder the rate that your lawn grows will slow too. This means that if it isn’t getting the nutrients it needs now and is a little unhealthy, it enters winter being unprepared for the change in conditions. This will leave your lawn very susceptible to winter weeds, compaction, shade related issues and frost.

How should I fertilise my lawn in Autumn?

It is recommended that you apply a balanced fertiliser to your grass, which contains micro-nutrients and trace elements that will replace some of the important aspects that may have been lost over summer. A slow release granular fertiliser will give up to 12 weeks of nutrients to your turf, as it gradually breaks down.

Should I use pre-emergent herbicide?

Autumn is also a great time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide, which targets any weeds before they even appear. It gets to weed seeds before they take hold, by forming a barrier at soil level that affects the germination of any new seedlings.

The combination fertiliser and pre-emergent product provides an ideal mechanism to take the herbicide to just under the soil and the fertiliser helps give a quick boost to your lawn. Despite having a fertiliser component, we still recommend you apply your seasonal fertiliser application to complement the pre-emergent.
