How to Renovate Sir Grange Zoysia Lawns 1

Sir Grange Zoysia is one of Sunshine Coast's most premium turf varieties, loved for its fine leaf, deep green colour, and exceptional drought tolerance. While it's naturally low maintenance, an annual renovation helps maintain density, colour, and overall lawn health.

Whether your lawn has thinned over winter or simply needs a refresh, this guide will walk you through the renovation process.

when should you renovate?

The ideal time to renovate Sir Grange is during spring, once soil temperatures have warmed and the lawn has resumed active growth. Renovating too early can slow recovery because Zoysia naturally grows more slowly than any other variety.

step 1: mow the lawn low

Start by lowering your mower height and gradually cutting the lawn shorter than normal.

  • Remove only a third of the leaf blade at each pass.
  • Aim for approximately 15-20mm with rotary mower or lower if using a cylinder mower.
  • Collect all clippings.

This allows sunlight to reach the base of the turf and prepares the lawn for renovation.

Step 2: remove thatch

If your lawn has developed a layer of dead material, use a scarifier or dethatching rake to remove as much thatch as possible.

Removing excess that improves:

  • Air movement
  • Water penetration
  • Fertiliser efficiency
  • New growth

Don't be alarmed if the lawn looks rough afterwards, this is completely normal.

Step 3: Aerate the soil

Compacted soil limits root development and water movement.

Use a core aerator or garden fork to create holes across the lawn, paying extra attention to high traffic areas.

Aeration encourages:

  • Stronger root growth
  • Better drainage
  • Improved fertiliser uptake
step 4: top dress if required

If your lawn has uneven areas, apply a light layer of quality washed sand or a suitable lawn top dressing mix.

Spread only enough material to level minor imperfections while allowing the grass leaves to remain visible.

Water lightly after spreading to help the material settle.

Step 5: Apply fertiliser

Now it's time to feed the lawn.

Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser

This professional slow-release fertiliser contains both fast acting and controlled release nutrients, providing an immediate colour boost while feeding the lawn for up to 12 weeks.

For Sir Grange, apply at approximately 1kg per 100m2 during spring and summer, watering the lawn immediately after application.

Ideal if you're looking for:

  • Faster green up
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Sustained growth
  • Excellent colour response

ProPlus Natural Carbon Fertiliser

ProPlus combines slow-release nutrients with natural carbon technology to improve nutrient retention and support healthier soil biology.

Benefits include:

  • Longer lasting nutrition
  • Reduced nutrient leaching
  • Improved soil health
  • Strong root development
step 6: water deeply

Following fertiliser application:

  • Water thoroughly to activate the fertiliser
  • Continue watering deeply but less frequently
  • Adjust irrigation according to rainfall and temperatures.

Deep watering encourages deeper root systems and better drought resilience.

step 7: resume regular mowing

Once new growth appears:

  • Return to your normal mowing schedule.
  • Mow regularly rather than removing large amounts of growth.
  • Never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single mow.

Frequent mowing encourages Sir Grange to become denser and more uniform.

Step 8: monitor recovery

Over the following 4-8 weeks you should notice:

  • Improved colour
  • Increased turf density
  • Stronger lateral growth
  • Better resistance to weeds
  • A healthier overall appearance

Avoid heavy traffic while the lawn is actively recovering.

ongoing maintenance tips

To keep your Sir Grange looking its best throughout the growing season:

  • Fertilise every 8-12 weeks during active growth.
  • Water deeply when needed.
  • Mow consistently.
  • Remove excess thatch annually.
  • Aerate compacted areas every year or two.
