How To Mow My Lawn 1

This guide takes the guesswork out of mowing your lawn. While personal preference does play a part, mowing your lawn at the correct height is vital for maintaining a healthy, lush lawn.

Every lawn variety has its own recommended mowing height, and some grasses require more frequent mowing than others, particularly during the warmer months. Before choosing a new lawn, it's worth considering how often you're happy to mow, as regular maintenance is the key to keeping your lawn healthy and the envy of the neighbourhood.

Zoysia Grasses

(Sir Grange Zoysia, Zoysia Australis and Platinum Zoysia)

Zoysia varieties are slower growing than most other lawn types, meaning they require less frequent mowing. However, they do have a high silica content in their leaves, so it's important to keep your mower blades sharp. Dull blades tear the leaf rather than cutting it cleanly, which can leave the lawn looking brown after mowing.

A simple way to think about it is this: shaving with a blunt razor leaves your skin irritated, the same principle applies to your lawn. A clean cut helps the grass recover quickly and keeps it looking its best.

We recommend mowing Zoysia at least once every two weeks during the growing season. Regular mowing also helps prevent excessive thatch build-up, which can make the lawn feel soft and spongy while reducing its overall health.

Recommended mowing height: 10mm - unmown

Buffalo Grasses

(Sir Walter DNA Soft Leaf Buffalo and Stampede Hybrid Buffalo)

Buffalo grasses grow a little faster than Zoysia's and generally benefit from weekly mowing during the growing season.

If left too long between mows, Buffalo lawns can develop thick runners and stolons that grow over one another, creating what we like to call the "tiered cake" effect. This can make the lawn feel uneven and spongy underfoot. Regular mowing helps keep the lawn dense, healthy and attractive while preventing this build up.

Recommended mowing 30mm - 50mm

Couch Grass

Nullarbor Couch is one of the fastest growing lawn varieties, especially during spring and summer. During peak growing periods, it may need mowing twice a week to maintain an even appearance and avoid removing too much leaf at once, which can result in scalping and make your lawn appear brown in colour.

Frequent mowing encourages Couch to grow thicker and denser, creating the fine, manicured finish it's known for.

Recommended mowing 5mm to 30mm

General Mowing Tips

  • Never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single mow.
  • Keep mower blades sharp for a clean cut and healthier lawn.
  • Mow more frequently during the warmer months when growth is at its peak.
  • Raise your mowing height slightly during hot, dry weather to help the lawn retain moisture and reduce stress.
  • Regular mowing encourages thicker growth and helps reduce weeds by creating a dense, healthy turf.
  • Alternate your mowing direction each time you mow. Changing direction encourages the grass to grow laterally rather than continually leaning in the same direction. This helps create a thicker, stronger canopy, improves turf density, and prevents wheel ruts and soil compaction from developing in the same tracks each week.
