Buffalo grass is a popular choice for lawns across the UK, offering lush, durable turf. As lawn renovation season approaches, you may be wondering if Buffalo grass can be renovated. The answer is yes, but with a few important considerations. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the steps to renovate your Buffalo lawn successfully, without causing harm.
Buffalo grass grows primarily through its above-ground runner system, unlike Couch or Kikuyu grasses, which rely on underground rhizomes for recovery. While Couch and Kikuyu can bounce back from near-total soil disruption, Buffalo requires more careful treatment. You can remove the top layer of overlapping stolons, but it’s crucial to leave some stolons intact and attached to the soil to ensure healthy regrowth.
One of the most effective ways to rejuvenate your Buffalo lawn is by dethatching. To do this, use your mower to perform a low mow and remove the dry thatch that’s built up in the grass profile. Gradually lower the mower height to avoid cutting into the plant material too drastically. After each mow, check how much material has been removed, then adjust the height as necessary. Repeat the process until the thatch is removed but the grass runners remain intact.
If you decide to use a scarifier on your Buffalo lawn, always start by testing the machine on a small section using the highest and least aggressive setting. This will help you avoid causing damage to the runners. Once you’re satisfied with the results and the runners are still intact, you can proceed across the whole lawn.
If you prefer using a scarifying rake, gently rake the area, taking care to monitor how much material you’re removing. Always ensure that the grass runners are still in place, and be mindful not to disrupt too much of the lawn.
When top dressing your Buffalo grass, we recommend a mixture of 80% sand and 20% loam for improving soil profile. If your goal is to level the lawn, opt for washed or screened river sand. Apply the top dressing evenly across the lawn, then use the back of a rake or a soil leveller to work the mixture into the soil. Be sure to leave the tops of the grass blades visible above the sand or soil.
It’s important not to apply more than 5-10mm of top dressing at once. If further levelling is needed, spread the application over multiple sessions throughout Spring and Summer.
Once your lawn has undergone renovation, applying fertiliser is key to encouraging growth and restoring nutrients. We recommend using a well-balanced fertiliser like our Lawn Solutions Premium Fertiliser or a natural alternative like ProPlus Natural Carbon Fertiliser. Both products provide a combination of slow and fast-release granules, giving your lawn a boost now while continuing to nourish it during the recovery process.
By following these steps and taking the necessary precautions, your Buffalo grass lawn will be well on its way to a healthy, thriving appearance. Remember, renovation is a process that requires patience, but with the right care, your lawn will bounce back stronger than ever.
