Laying turf in winter – yes or no?

Posted on May 14, 2021 by Greg Pelka

So, you’re thinking about laying some turf during the cooler months… but aren’t sure if it’s the right thing to do. Is it a good time of year? Is it too cold? Will the lawn like the weather? All these questions, plus many more, are asked by our customers all year round and we are here to tell you, once and for all.

Winter is a great time to lay turf.

There is a common belief that planting is limited to the warmer months. And while there are valid reasons for this as far as plants go, laying turf in Australia can be done year round.

Keep reading if you would like to hear all about the benefits to laying turf once the temperatures start to drop… your yard will thank you!

Benefits of laying turf in winter

There are a variety of benefits when it comes to laying turf in the cooler months, such as:

  • Established Turf: By installing turf during winter, you can have a fully established lawn in time for summer. Why wait until spring where you can’t use your lawn until it’s established? Get a head start now!
  • Mowing: You won’t have to mow your lawn until the weather warms up.
  • Watering: Laying turf in summer can often mean watering several times a day to ensure moisture is retained. While in the cooler months, watering is not needed anywhere near as much, you can essentially halve your water usage and still maintain a healthy lawn.
  • Moisture retention: Autumn and spring provide the perfect environment for moisture retention and healthy root development, as soil and air temperatures are optimal. And while turf is known to take longer to establish itself in cooler months due to slower growth cycles, there are still plenty of benefits.
  • Drying out: Turf that is laid during the cooler months will not dry out as quickly as turf that has been installed during the warmer months.

Tips for laying turf in winter

While your lawn is still establishing itself and self-repairing it is not as resilient, so extra care should be taken to reduce foot traffic, pets and garden furniture on your new lawn. But don’t let this be a deterrent to laying new turf. Installing new turf in the winter period means you will have a fully established and mature root system capable of handling a hot summer in its first year.

Just keep in mind, when laying a new lawn in winter the lawn will not root down properly until the weather warms up and it starts growing again. This doesn’t mean anything is wrong, and your lawn isn’t dying – it is simply sitting idle until it gets some warmer temperatures so it can fully establish.
